Charter City

The California Constitution authorizes a city’s voters to adopt a charter for the city which functions as the “constitution” for city government, creating a local set of rules that (subject to state and federal laws) govern the operation and functions of the city.

Under the Redwood City Charter (Section 44), the City Attorney is appointed by City Council. The responsibilities of the City Attorney’s Office consist of the following:

  • Advise the council and other city officials
  • Draft ordinances, resolutions, contracts and other legal documents
  • Attend all meetings of the council and of the planning commission
  • Prosecute or defend, as the case may be, all suits or cases to which the city may be a party to
  • Prosecute for all offenses against the ordinances of the city, and for such offenses against the laws of the state as may be required by law.
