For Immediate Release

Redwood City, CA - August 4, 2003 - Beginning Wednesday, August 6, Middlefield Road just north of Jefferson Avenue will be closed to through-traffic and pedestrians to allow for continuing relocation of an underground storm water culvert, and the subsequent construction of the City's underground parking garage and the Downtown retail/cinema project. This closure is expected to last for approximately two years. The street will be closed from the ‘southern' driveway of the Caltrain parking lot, to south of Hamilton Street (see map at www.redwoodcity.org/closuremap).

The closure will not change the location of the Farmer's Market or access to the Caltrain parking lot, although a number of parking spaces there will be unavailable for the duration of the street closure due to construction staging. Appropriate signage and detours will be in place, and motorists are urged to use extra caution when driving in the area, and to be aware of detours, slow traffic, and construction equipment and crews. Pedestrians are also urged to exercise additional caution in the area. People driving on Middlefield at that location will be detoured onto Jefferson and Broadway.

During this upcoming extended construction period, there will also be frequent lane closures on Jefferson Avenue between Middlefield and Broadway. The City would like to thank drivers, pedestrians, and businesses in the affected area for their patience and understanding, and apologize for any inconvenience that may occur.

Most of the storm water culvert construction in the Main Street parking lot behind City Hall and the Post Office is complete, and most of the lot has been re-opened for use. The alley between City Hall and the Post Office will remain temporarily closed, and a small area in the Main Street lot near Broadway will remain barricaded where the future tie-in of the underground storm water culvert will be completed in the fall.
