Jefferson Library Carlyle Quotation - 1970s One of the best remembered features of the Jefferson library is this quotation from 19th century British historian Thomas Carlyle that adorned the side of the building (look on the library wall just left of the traffic signal): All that mankind has done, thought, gained or been: it is lying as in magic preservation in the pages of books. They are the chosen possession of man. |
