This workshop was just one of the many opportunities to participate in this public process. Numerous other public meetings and presentations have been held since 2005, and the planning team continues to meet this fall and winter with various City commissions and committees open to the public for further input.
Everyone interested will have the opportunity to respond again once land use alternatives and policy direction are set, which is anticipated to be early 2009.
Overall, participants at the September 27 workshop commented on several key issues, including sustainability, mobility, neighborhoods, and urban design. One common refrain was the importance of using the General Plan to support sustainable development and help residents reduce carbon and water “footprints.” Suggested priorities included such ideas as:
- Using new development to improve existing urban areas
- Remaking areas that don’t function well now
- Encouraging higher-density, mixed-use or housing development along public transportation corridors
- Incorporating public open spaces, such as plazas, landscaping, and trees
- Improving public transportation and existing major roadways
- Improving pedestrian and bicycle facilities and routes
- Adding more connectivity to areas that serve everyday needs, like schools, shopping, Downtown, recreational areas
- Restoring waterways, such as Redwood Creek
- Incorporating transitions from higher-density development to residential areas
