Retaining Neighborhood Character

(Jump to the questionnaire)

Throughout Redwood City, our established neighborhoods enjoy a wonderful variety in their distinct home types, design styles, and the resulting overall “character” of the area. The different character elements that define our neighborhoods are important to the identity of our community. But as new homes are built, or older ones remodeled or expanded, it is often a formidable task to retain that neighborhood’s character.

A study session is scheduled for November 30 at 7:30 pm in the council chambers of City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road, to discuss the issue of retaining neighborhood character. It’s an opportunity to learn about Redwood City’s identified “character areas,” to gain an overview of our community’s architectural styles and periods of growth, and to engage in a discussion to identify the most desirable features for retaining neighborhood character (see news release).

The agenda for this informational study session includes:

  • What constitutes a neighborhood’s character
  • How these diverse character elements evolved in Redwood City’s neighborhoods
  • What might be the most effective ways of helping to retain the neighborhoods’ characters.

The City's Planning staff has prepared a short questionnaire that helps to identify and focus on some of the key elements related to neighborhood character, and foster discussion of how:

  • a second story design should be approached;
  • a home's garage-to-house relationship should be designed;
  • a home's style of entry should be designed;
  • a neighoborhoods overall character type should be identified

To fill out the questionnaire, click here. There, you'll be able to view four groups of neighborhood pictures, select your preference from each of the four groups, and then click on "send email." It's anonymous, and there are no wrong answers! It's only intent is to foster discussion of these issues as the process moves forward.
