Community Budget Review Workshop Scheduled
for June 2
With Redwood City facing continuing budget deficits, there are difficult decisions ahead regarding cost-cutting measures and the level of City services. A community budget workshop has been scheduled to examine some of these possible cutbacks, and gain the public's input. The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2, 2004 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm , at the Community Activities Building , 1400 Roosevelt Avenue .
The City is seeking input and reactions on elements of the budget proposal that will be recommended to the City Council later in June. The workshop will begin with the City Manager and Finance Director presenting the background on the changes in City revenues and expenses that have created the projected deficit, and what service reductions are being recommended to address that deficit. The workshop participants will work in small groups to discuss and analyze these proposed cuts and impacts, and then all groups will report their perspectives and opinions back to the entire workshop.
The goal is to get the community's views on whether the expenditure cut recommendations make sense for the community of Redwood City. Later in the evening, the City Manager and Finance Director will share information on potential sources of new City revenues, and will solicit participants' feedback on which, if any, new revenues the City should pursue. A summary of this important community feedback will become part of the budget presentation to the City Council later in June.
Through processes like this community budget workshop the City would like to assure the public that City staff and the City Council are approaching this situation intelligently, cautiously, and creatively, with a great deal of confidence in their ability to successfully meet this challenge, which is being faced by most cities throughout California.

Accessible Recreation Activities Program Participants to Perform Theater Piece - June 7
The Redwood City Accessible Recreation Activities Program (ARAP) is proud to present a theatrical performance entitled "Pieces of Ourselves, A Series of Short Plays" at 8 pm on Monday, June 7th at the Little Theatre, located at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue. Members of the community are encouraged to attend this performance to show support for these dedicated thespians that have written, directed, and performed all of these original short plays. The performance is free, however donations to support ARAP's art and creative expression programs are greatly appreciated. The performance will be followed by a celebration where light snacks and beverages will be served and autographs will be signed by performers.
The ARAP Drama Club is comprised of fifteen members of the community with various developmental disabilities. The class focuses on each participant's strengths and gives the students an opportunity to express themselves on the stage. The students in the class have learned a lot about the theatre world, but more importantly, have developed life-long friendships with other actors in the class.
With assistance from group home managers, caretakers, and/or parents, the students wrote their plays at home and brought them to class to be given life. The students recruited their actors, designed their sets and discussed any technical aspects (lights, curtains, special effects). On Monday, June 7th they will present their personal expression to their friends, family, and the general public.

Smoke Alarm Helps Protect Residents in Fire
Occupants of a Redwood City apartment were spared major injury and damage last month when their smoke alarm provided them with warning of the late afternoon fire.
The Redwood City Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in an apartment building located on Gorgon Street . When the first engine arrived, fire fighters found a kitchen well-involved with fire. They were able to get water on the fire quickly, bringing it under control in less than 15 minutes. The rest of that apartment unit, as well as adjacent units, were thoroughly checked and it was determined that the fire was contained to the apartment where it started.
One occupant of the apartment was treated by Redwood City Fire Department Paramedics and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Three occupants were displaced and were provided emergency housing by the Red Cross. With the exception of the apartment where the fire began, the rest of the building was habitable and the residents were allowed to return home.
There were people in the apartment unit when the fire started, and fire fighters credit working smoke detectors for providing the occupants with sufficient warning to get out of the building. Redwood City Fire Department staff noted that injury and death due to a fire can often be avoided by ensuring a working smoke detector is in the home. More information on the use of smoke detectors in the home, and other fire-safety tips, can be found online at www.redwoodcity.org/fire, and at www.usfa.fema.gov/public/hfs/alarms.shtm
