Celebrate World Environment Day

The community of Redwood City is invited to celebrate and participate locally in the World Environment Day/Tour des Trees Bike Ride/Park Stroll at Red Morton Park. The fun starts at 9:00 am on Saturday June 4th and continues until 1 pm.

Activities include:

  • a 16-mile Tour des Trees bike ride;
  • children’s walk, bike, or scoot around Red Morton Park;
  • free children’s activities including face painting and arts and crafts;
  • information about local environmental and non-profit groups;
  • free T-shirts and trees seedlings to the first 100 reserved participants;
  • the ceremonial planting of a tree in Red Morton Park.
  • The Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program will be there, with information and free digital thermometers for those that turn in their old mercury-filled thermometers.

Redwood City is combining the Tour des Trees with World Environment Day (www.wed2005.org) in an effort to raise awareness and participation in protecting our environment and helping our urban forest.

The Tour des Trees Redwood City is a fund raiser for the TREE Fund, a non-profit tree research foundation (www.treefund.org). Elsewhere in the country, the Tour des Trees lasts up to a week, and each day of the ride a tree is planted along the route. Community participation in this one-day event will help plant a tree and grow the TREE Fund to benefit our urban trees.

Younger tree-lovers and environmentalists can participate by walking, riding, or scooting around Red Morton Park and enjoy the activities safely with a playground and park facilities nearby – the environmental festival is on from 10 am until 1 pm, with a special tree planting ceremony at 11 am, sponsored by CityTrees, Redwood City’s non-profit tree planting organization (www.citytrees.org).

Retail-Cinema Streetscape Construction, Detours, Street Closures

While the retail-cinema structure continues to make solid progress, there remains a great deal of work that will have an impact on Downtown traffic and pedestrians. Here is an overview of the major elements of that impact:

  • To accommodate the bulk of the streetscape work that will enhance the new Downtown retail-cinema project, Broadway will be entirely closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic between Jefferson and Hamilton starting in July. This closure is expected to last for the duration of the construction, through the end of 2005.

  • The removal of trees and concrete planters on Broadway between Jefferson and Hamilton will begin within the next two weeks. This removal will make room for the news streetscape improvements that will go in as part of the retail-cinema project.

  • Installation of a new water line and an increased-capacity sewer main underneath Broadway will take place in June – watch for work and street closures on Broadway between Hamilton and Wharf Street (one block past Jefferson).

The City would like to thank drivers, pedestrians, and businesses in the affected area for their patience and understanding, and apologize for any inconvenience that may occur. This work is a necessary part of the new retail-cinema project that will help bring a renaissance to Downtown Redwood City. All scheduling is subject to change, and the City will keep the downtown community informed of new schedule information.

Special Joint Study Session on Downtown Precise Plan

Please plan to attend a special community meeting and study session with the City Council, Planning Commission, and Architectural Review Committee to discuss the Downtown Precise PlanMonday, June 13, 2005 at 7 pm in the Council Chambers, 1017 Middlefield Road.

The Downtown Precise Plan is the policy and regulatory document that will guide change and implement the community vision for Downtown. For planning purposes, Downtown is considered the area bounded by Veteran’s Boulevard, Brewster Avenue, El Camino Real, Maple Street, and Main Street.

The discussion will encompass questions such as:

  • What should Downtown streets look and feel like?
  • What would attract people to live in the Downtown?
  • Is housing in the Downtown financially feasible? What about traffic congestion?
  • What is the right mix of restaurant and retail uses?
  • What kind of architecture is right for Downtown?
  • How tall should Downtown buildings be?
  • Can El Camino Real really be a “grand boulevard”?
  • How can we make the most of the transit facility for both Downtown and the City?
  • What happened in the previous public workshops on the Downtown, and how do we implement the community’s recommendations from those meetings?

This joint study session and workshop sets the stage for the drafting of the plan. Please join the City Council, Planning Commission and Architectural Review Committee and share your thoughts and ideas for the continued transformation of downtown — the “living room” of the community. It’s your downtown!
