City Hosts Free Community Screening of “Paper Clips” Documentary on March 6

Redwood City will be hosting a FREE screening of the renowned documentary film “Paper Clips” (including popcorn and drinks) for the Redwood City community on Monday, March 6th at 7:00 pm, in the Community Room of the Downtown Library, 1044 Middlefield Road.

Paper Clips is a documentary about an extraordinary experiment in Holocaust education. Struggling to grasp the concept of six million Holocaust victims, students at Whitwell Middle School in rural Tennessee decide to collect six million paper clips to better understand the extent of this crime against humanity. It’s an uplifting film about how their experience transformed the students and their community. In the process, it explores our present-day prejudices and shows how one little idea can snowball into a terrific multi-generational community effort.

The movie is an hour-and-a-half long, and you’re encouraged to stay afterwards to talk about the movie with other viewers. RSVPs are encouraged to 780-7300, or people should feel free to drop in.

Spotlight on Two March Events at the Library

On Sunday, March 5, there will be a display of antique automobiles in the public parking lot next to the Downtown Library at the corner of Jefferson and Middlefield Roads from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. The community is invited to take a close look at these lovingly restored cars – and, it’s a great opportunity to get information from antique car club members about the cars and car restoring. The event is free and promises a great time for kids, families, adults, and seniors! Members of the Mid Peninsula Old Time Auto Club will be on hand to answer any questions about the vehicles. Books and photos of antique cars to complement Sunday’s event are on display in the Downtown Library through March 5.

Then, on Thursday, March 9, a Spring Gardening Workshop comes to the Downtown Library at 7:30 p.m. Erhard Wegman will offer expert local information on planting for successful spring veggies and flowers. Erhard Wegman is part of the family that has owned Wegman's Nursery in Redwood City for 45 years. Redwood City Students Learn to be WaterWise

Last month, many local children brought education home - and their families were delighted when they saw a box packed full of water efficient products that will help save water and money, every day. The City has teamed-up with Resource Action Programs to distribute over 500 WaterWise kits to local elementary schools. Fifth-grade students in several schools throughout the city are spending one week learning the importance of conserving water, and will install high efficiency water-saving tools in their homes and learn techniques for saving nearly half of the water their families use.

But instead of simply reading textbooks and completing traditional homework assignments, the students have the opportunity to participate in exciting activities, games, and projects, and have even been given the tools needed to make changes, turning regular learning into unforgettable conservation knowledge for the students and their families – the hands-on way! During class, students and teachers discussed the significance of water conservation by participating in various activities and assignments.

The students were also given a WaterWise Resource Action Kit to take home that contained a high-efficiency showerhead, kitchen and bathroom aerators, an energy cost calculator, an interactive CD-ROM, and more. The immediate result is an anticipated annual savings of over 4.6 million gallons of water! One of the longer-term benefits of the program is to help create lasting partnerships between local schools and the community while generating enduring attitude changes about energy and water conservation.

This is just one of many water conservation programs Redwood City is bringing to the community – for more information on this and other water saving programs visit the water conservation website.
