Informational Workshop on Peninsula Park Proposal

The Redwood City Planning Commission invites the community to participate in an informational workshop to discuss the Peninsula Park development proposal.

This is the first of three such workshops, and is scheduled for Thursday, September 7th, 2006 beginning at 7 pm at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue (the other two workshops are scheduled for September 28 and October 11).

To make it easier to attend, the City is providing FREE CHILDCARE during this meeting for children ages 3-9. Please call 780-7234 to reserve child care. Free snacks and beverages will also be provided. Spanish translation will be available at this workshop.

The workshops are designed to offer a friendly, open, and encouraging environment for community discussion. All of the community’s comments from this and the next two workshops will be provided to a joint study session of the Planning Commission and the Architectural Review Committee scheduled for October 17th.

This proposal encompasses a portion of the area formerly proposed as Marina Shores Village. The developer’s initial design ideas for this 33-acre development include 796 residential units, 200 hotel rooms, 10,000 square feet of retail space, public park acreage and promenades, and public access to the waterfront.

No decisions will be made at this early stage – there will be significant opportunity for community involvement and comment over the entire project review period, if the development proposal continues to move forward through the City’s decision-making process.

The City is committed to partner with the community to ensure a purposeful public involvement in this proposal in this early stage, and to continue to engage and involve the community at every point in the process.

Schools/City Partner for Safe Drop-Off & Pick-Up of Kids

As the 2006-2007 school year gets into full swing, the City of Redwood City and the Redwood City School District are joining forces to encourage Safety First when it comes to getting kids to and from school.

For the first time, the City and the School District have developed a comprehensive campaign designed to address safety issues related to the drop off and pick up of children at local schools. By encouraging safe practices, the campaign also aims to decrease the impact that back-to-school traffic has on neighborhood residents.

Please visit the City's new Safety First web pages for bilingual information on safe drop-off and pick-up procedures, other safety information, and links to web pages that may be helpful to parents and caregivers who drop off or pick up kids. Also go to the Redwood City School District web page for more information on this and other school issues.

Family Place and Kids’ Place Under Construction at Downtown Library

The Childrens’ Section at the Downtown Library is now undergoing a major renovation (work began on Monday, August 21st) in order to offer a fresh, expanded space for children and families – the new Family Place and Kids’ Place.

To accomplish this transition, the Children’s Room will be closed to the public during construction until it’s re-opening, which is anticipated for October, 2006.

All children’s materials will still be available, temporarily relocated to areas throughout the library. Story times and other programs continue as announced. Programs and events can be confirmed by calling 780-7017.

The Family Place is being created with the infant-to-five set in mind. Carved out of the existing Children’s Room, this space will cater to the needs of babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, and their families. Plans feature colorful, comfortable seating, childlike décor, expanded picture books and beginning-to-read books displayed face out, and a new programming space, all in an environment that supports the age-appropriate behavior of young children.

The Kids’ Place will sit adjacent to The Family Place and will be tailored to the distinct needs of elementary and middle school children. Their primary use is of the library’s collection and computers. The remodeled space will hold ample tables and chairs for study, a reconfigured place for independent computer use, and more computers.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training & Website

Emergency preparedness should be at the top of every family’s list of important things to accomplish. The Redwood City Fire Department is ready to help individuals, families, and neighborhoods to be fully prepared for disaster by offering Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training.

CERT educates community members about how to prepare their household, family, and neighborhood for a potential disaster, and how to respond during the aftermath of an emergency that impacts their street, block, or neighborhood. It provides community members with training in basic disaster response skills including fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, disaster medical operations, and more.

Go to the new CERT web page where you’ll find a great deal of valuable emergency preparedness information for every resident, including a number of disaster planning checklists, links to other valuable safety informational websites, a sampling of the CERT coursework, and other key preparedness elements.

The first CERT class starts soon, so go to the website or call 780-7400 for information.

Artificial Turf Installation Scheduled

As part of Redwood City’s ongoing water conservation efforts, and to provide the highest quality sports and playing field facilities for the community, the City will be installing over seven acres of artificial turf at several fields in Red Morton Park.

Installation of synthetic turf at Griffin/Bechet Field will begin on September 5, and is expected to be complete and ready for public use by the end of November. The grass at McGarvey and Mitchell Fields will also be replaced with artificial turf, beginning in December, with completion estimated for late spring, 2007. The total cost for the new turf installed in these fields is approximately $4 million, which comes from the City’s Capital Improvement Program fund, as approved by the City Council on August 7, 2006, in addition to some grant funds.

The state-of-the-art synthetic surface to be used offers many advantages:

  • It’s a huge water-saver! The new turf at these sites alone is estimated to save approximately 5 million gallons of water annually.
  • It can withstand significantly higher levels of use than natural turf, without the need for periodic closure for regeneration
  • It saves money because it requires very little maintenance – no water, no fertilizer, no mowing or other landscaping
  • The synthetic turf’s estimated 10-year lifetime is significantly longer than that of natural turf
  • It provides a ‘cushioned’ surface for users and can be used in wet weather, with superior drainage capacity.

During the installation periods, these fields will be completely unavailable for public use. Regular working hours for these projects will be from 7:30 am to 4 pm, weekdays.
