Children's Authors & Illustrators Festival at Orion School

The entire community is invited to the 6th Annual Orion School Children's Authors & Illustrators Festival!

  • DateSaturday, February 2, 2008\
  • Time:  10 am - 3:30 pm
  • Location:  Orion Elementary School, 815 Allerton Street, Redwood City
  • Price:  FREE! Books and food will be available to purchase
  • Information:  650-363-0611 or go online.

This wonderful family-style community festival helps to bring together children and their familes, with the people who create the books they love. On a school level, our children really learn about these authors in depth and gain a real sense of connection with these great authors and illustrators, and with the festival.

This year's festival features an amazing lineup of authors and illustrators, including Caldecott winning artist, Eric Rohmann. Also featured are Madeleine Dunphy, Candace Fleming (two- time winner of the California Young Reader Medal!) Elissa Haden Guest, Matthew Holm, Francisco Jimenez, Elisa Kleven and Katherine Tillotson.

The festival organizers are very pleased to offer Spanish and Sign Language translation at all the presentations!

Call 650-363-0611 or visit the Orion School website for more information.

Redwood City's Cool Campaign Kick Off is February 7

How can we reduce energy use and minimize waste? What are the best ways to lower our community’s carbon emissions? What kind of positive action can a household take to help protect our future from climate change?

These are great questions, and Redwood City recognizes that climate projtection is a critical issue for both today and for the generations to come. The City's Cool Campaign is a community building project that will bring people together around climate protection.

The community is invited to join in the inauguration of this new program:

  • Redwood City Cool Campaign Kick Off Event
    Thursday, February 7th, 2008
    6:30 – 8:30 pm
    City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road

After dinner and an overview of the program, staff will unveil the Cool Campaign interactive website created by the City. This will be a great tool providing information, assistance, and easy ways for community members to take personal, positive action to reduce energy use and carbon emissions in their home, neighborhood, and workplace – and make a real difference!

RSVPs are requested to bross@redwoodcity.org, or 650-780-5917.

This inaugural event (in collaboration with non-profit environmental action group Acterra – www.acterra.org) will be fun, informative, and inspiring – a catalyst for neighbors to join in and do their part for climate protection. Middle school or high school age kids are welcome and encouraged to participate. And, everyone who gets to this event via mass transit, carpool, or other alternative to the single-occupant car will be entered into a special drawing!

Preschool Preview Night - Great Resource for Parents

The community is invited to Redwood City’s annual “Preschool Preview Night,” a preschool / child care & parent resource fair that has become a key resource for parents considering their child’s early care and education.

This free, informative event will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at the Community Activities Building , 1400 Roosevelt Avenue. The fabulous informational open house is from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, and parents can also take in a special presentation on Choosing Quality Preschool and Child Care (courtesy of the Child Care Coordinating Council) at 5:30 or at 6:30 pm.

Parents are invited to drop in to see displays and obtain information from a variety of early care and education programs in the mid-peninsula region (Belmont to Palo Alto). Representatives from these programs will be available to talk with parents about their organizations and to help determine which programs might be the best “fit” for kids. Parents’ questions about family child care homes, State licensing, in-home care, quality indicators, accreditation, and more can be answered, giving them the tools necessary to help them make informed and intelligent decisions about their child’s care and educational development.

General information on the Preschool Preview Night is available by calling 650-780-7311 or 650-224-1586.
