Octobop featuring Lisa Engelken
West Coast Jazz
Monday, July 16, 2012
6:00-8:00pm
2600 Block of Broadway (map)
Octobop - Cool jazz. Images of the early days on the West Coast when new ideas, harmonies, ensemble playing and great improvisation were all happening. Recreating and updating that experience is the mission of Octobop. Performing and promoting the music that began with The Birth of the Cool -- and the innovations of Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Dave Pell, Jimmy Guiffre, and Howard Rumsey among others -- Octobop makes cool jazz hot again. Lisa Engleken is a fearless singer with a daunting stage presence. Part freight train, part junkyard trombone, the tumbleweed Engelken alternately locomotes and floats through a myriad of moods & vocal styles, spicing her tunes with Portuguese, French, Spanish and Italian. But operatic and theatrical training couldn’t polish off the rough edges as she wields her acrobatic 3-octave range like a weapon, like a wand, intensified by sheer joy, crankiness and irony.

SF Mime Troupe*
Wednesday, July 18, 2012
6:30pm (music starts at 6pm)
Courthouse Square (map)
“Pity the poor one percent! Abused in that sliver of press they don't own, condemned in the streets by a rabble to who don't appreciate the benefits of being trickled down on, raked over the coals by the few politicians who aren't in their back pockets.Talk about an oppressed minority!
Well, finally someone is stepping up to tell their story as the San Francisco Mime Troupe presents For the Greater Good, or The Last Election, a melodramatic tale that should warm the hearts of every billionaire - if they have one. Based on the classic "The Poor of New York," the Troupe ironically turns the story on its head, telling it from the point of view of the misunderstood Godzill-ionaires who have made this country what it is today: broke.
