Training in the Fire Department

The role of today's firefighter is one of many trades. We are called to the scene of many types of emergencies involving any number of building types and many forms of equipment. To mitigate emergencies in a safe manner for the firefighters and the public, we must have knowledge of the following disciplines:

  • Building construction
  • Automobile engineering
  • Fire Science
  • Medical care
  • Swift water and technical rescue
  • Hazardous materials and Weapons of Mass Destruction

The training of firefighters begins with a 14 week fire academy and continues throughout their career. The department averages two hours of training a day and many other training opportunities are offered each month. A firefighter will attend training even on his last day on duty before retirement.
