Historic Resources Advisory Committee

The Historic Resources Advisory Committee (H.R.A.C.) consists of five members as amended by Minute Order 11-105 and Ordinance No. 2639.  Ordinance No. 2639 states that the Committee shall consist of five (5) members, who shall be appointed from, but not limited to, such professions, disciplines and interests as: members of the Redwood City Heritage Association and other preservation related organizations; licensed architects and structural engineers; urban planners and landscape architects; attorneys and real estate experts; members of community groups and residents within historic districts, occupants of historic landmarks and owners of historic sites. Such members shall, at the time of their appointment and continuously during their incumbency, be residents and electors of the City.

These members are appointed by the Planning Commission for terms of three years.  All members have experience and training in state and federal historic standing requirements.  The H.R.A.C. was established by Ordinance No. 1815 effective March 10, 1980 with no term being set for members, and amended by Ordinance No. 1923 January 6, 1986 to establish terms of office.

Its purpose is to advocate the preservation and appropriate rehabilitation of historically significant properties and structures as set forth in the Historic Resources Element of the General Plan. The key duty of the H.R.A.C. is to make recommendations to the Planning Commission which relate to the City's Historic Preservation Ordinance; and include the following goals:

  • Advise on matters of historical significance and administer and support historic resource education and programs.
  • Safeguard the City's heritage by providing for the protection of landmarks representing significant elements of its history.

  • Encourage public knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of Redwood City's role in local and regional history.

  • Foster civic and neighborhood pride and a sense of identity based on the recognition and use of historic and cultural resources.

  • Promote the enjoyment and use of historic and cultural resources appropriate for the education and recreation of the citizenry.

  • Strengthen the economy of the City by protecting and enhancing the City's historical features for residents, visitors and tourists.

For more information regarding current activities of the Historic Resources Advisory Committee, contact the staff advisor in the Planning Division, who acts as secretary to this committee.
