Airtight borders, militarized corporate control on natural resources, and an underground class of Mexicans who flock to dangerous “cybracero” factories on the Mexican/USA border for work are just part of this dystopian vision. Fleeing a fatal intervention with the government, Memo Cruz leaves his tiny hometown and heads north to the border in search of a better future. He implants black-market nodes into his body in order to gain employment in a factory that performs virtual labor for the USA. Set in Chihuahua in the lush Sierra Tarahumara of northwest Mexico, this beautifully photographed fable recounts the story of two indigenous Raramuri brothers who, when sent on an errand, lose their way home as well as their grandfather’s horse. The brothers’ adventures illuminate the traditional Raramuri way of life while spinning a universal coming-of-age tale. The film, spoken in Raramuri, traces the boys’ struggle to straddle two cultures while holding on to their own identity. Directors Laura Guzman and Israel Cardenas tell a nostalgic story of purity and naivete, creating both an artful portrait and a respectful commentary of Raramuri people and their way of life.

Isabel Munoz brings us her first feature documentary, which takes us inside the chaos and passion of everyday life in Mexico City. A group of young men put together a post-punk band called Su merce. After years of dealing with disappearing record labels and trying to make it big, they begin to lose faith and decide to keep making music just for the sake of art. Munoz follows them through the streets where they grew up and where some of them still live, as they recount how they lost their friends and innocence, their encounters with drugs, crime and death. A reflecting on the difficult life this young people face nowadays in Mexico City and how they express in their music the proud of being “chilango”.
