Redwood City Police Activities League and San Mateo Credit Union Present the Northern California Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament, Help to Raise Funds for PAL

Redwood City, CA - April 24, 2003 - Redwood City's Police Activities League (PAL) is hosting the Northern California Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament, sponsored by the San Mateo Credit Union. Bouts begin at 2:00 pm on both Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 4th, 2003, at the PAL boxing gym at 2107 Broadway (corner of Jefferson). The boxing event is being conducted by the USA Boxing – Junior Olympic Program.

This is a great opportunity to see young boxers show their skills, and to support PAL and its boxing program. Tickets are $10, and are available at the door, or in advance from Redwood City PAL by calling 650-556-9702. Proceeds from the event go to support the PAL boxing program, and help the young boxers to further their skills and compete with other PAL boxers throughout the nation.

Redwood City PAL's boxing program is designed to foster a disciplined training program, instill a sense of teamwork, encourage education, inspire self-confidence and esteem, and offer a sports activity as an alternative to gangs or just ‘hanging around.' The program has had success in teaching young boys and girls to become responsible, caring, and law abiding adults.

The Redwood City PAL is a nonprofit community-based organization that was founded in 1995 at the initiative of Police Chief Carlos Bolanos with the support of the City of Redwood City. PAL provides intervention, prevention, and alternative programs to at-risk and economically challenged youth in Redwood City. PAL influences thousands of children and teen lives in positive ways each year. At its start, it served approximately 200 youth; today, it is regularly serving over 3,200 youth per year.
