For Immediate Release

Jefferson Avenue Lane Closures Starting Friday

Redwood City, CA - August 13, 2003 - Beginning as early as Friday, August 15, Jefferson Avenue between Middlefield Road and Broadway will be reduced to one lane in each direction, to allow for continuing relocation of utilities and an underground storm water culvert. These lane closures are expected to last for approximately two months, and will significantly impact the traffic flow on Jefferson Avenue. Further, for the duration of the lane closures there will be no on-street parking in front of the U.S. Post Office. Drivers are urged instead to park in the Main Street Parking Lot behind the Post Office, accessible from either Broadway or Main Street.

Appropriate signage will be in place, and motorists are urged to consider alternate routes, use extra caution when driving in the area, and to be aware of detours, slow traffic, and construction equipment and crews. Pedestrians are also urged to exercise additional caution in the area.

The City would like to thank drivers, pedestrians, and businesses in the affected area for their patience and understanding, and apologize for any inconvenience that may occur.

This culvert relocation is necessary so that excavation of Redwood City's underground garage, and ultimately the retail/cinema project, may take place. The storm water culvert construction in the Main Street parking lot behind City Hall and the Post Office is largely complete, and most of the parking lot has been re-opened for use. The alley between City Hall and the Post Office remains temporarily closed, and a small area in the Main Street lot near Broadway will remain barricaded where the future tie-in of the underground storm water culvert will be completed in the fall.
