Archived News Release from 2003 For Immediate Release Redwood City Neighborhood Street Improvements Scheduled Redwood City, CA - July 21, 2003 – As part of its ongoing roadway preventative maintenance program, the City of Redwood City has scheduled resurfacing projects on a number of neighborhood streets. This work will result in smoother, safer, improved roadways, but will cause some inconvenience to residents and motorists in these areas during construction. Neighborhoods are being notified when work is scheduled in their specific areas, and are being provided with details about what work will take place, its duration, and information on how to help make it a problem-free construction project. The short-term inconvenience primarily consists of a requirement to keep cars off the street entirely during certain portions of the work, and to park cars off street for approximately two days after the work. It's expected that during the main part of the work, streets will be reopened to traffic by 5:00 pm. The work is scheduled to begin on July 28. In general, the first phase of work on any given street is to prepare it for resurfacing by repairing failed areas and low spots, sealing large cracks with filler material, and removing weeds. The second phase will include spraying the street with an "emulsion binder" and subsequent application of gravel. Neighbors' patience is most requested at this point in the project, and they are advised to drive slow and keep a further distance between cars. During this phase, the street will temporarily have the appearance of a gravel road, until the gravel is fully embedded into the emulsion binder. The final phase takes place after the gravel has been compacted by traffic use. During this phase, loose material will be swept up and a final coating of a sand and oil mixture will be applied to "seal" the street. At this time, until the seal is dry, neighbors are cautioned to keep not only cars, but also children and pets from coming into contact with the roadway, as the seal material is very difficult to remove from rugs, clothing, etc. Appropriate notification of residents and placement of "No Parking" signage will take place on each of the streets, as the schedule for that street is developed.
