A Potpourri of Music in Redwood Shores

Redwood City, CA - August 8, 2005 -  A wondrous variety of musical styles awaits families at the upcoming Concert in the Park in Redwood Shores, taking place this Thursday August 11 at Marlin Park from 6 to 8 pm. Marlin Park is located on Neptune Drive at Cringle Drive. This evening musical extravaganza is co-sponsored by the Redwood Shores Community Association and the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission.

The concert features three incredibly diverse acts: percussionist Akira Tana and Friends, barber shop quartet Velocity, and the violin students of Eric Leong and Sumi Nagasawa.

Belmont resident Akira Tana is a nationally renowned percussionist and jazz educator who has done concert, club and recording work with jazz greats such as Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Zoot Sims, Hubert Laws, Milt Jackson, Jim Hall, Art Farmer, The Paul Winter Consort, Paquito D’Rivera, James Moody, J.J. Johnson and the Manhattan Transfer among others. Tana has performed at the Tanglewood Music Festival under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa and Gunther Schuller and has accompanied diverse artists such as Charles Aznavour, Maurice Hines and Van Dyke Parks, with performances on more than 100 recordings.

Velocity is an award winning barbershop quartet based in San Jose. Velocity has won a number of local and regional competitions and sings a variety of styles.

Sumi Nagasawa and Eric Leong are Redwood Shores residents, accomplished musicians in their own right, and acclaimed educators. Their talented students in a broad range of ages are sure to provide listening fun and excitement.

All in all, this concert in Redwood Shores will provide families with a great variety of entertainment for a warm evening of relaxation on chairs or blankets – the community is invited to bring a picnic, the kids, meet neighbors, and enjoy some excellent music for every taste.
