Planning Commission to Discuss Costco Expansion Proposal at Public Hearing
Redwood City, CA - December 1 , 2006 -
At its meeting of December 5, 2006, the Redwood City Planning Commission will be conducting a public hearing on the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed Costco Warehouse Store and Gas Station project.
The meeting begins at 7 pm and will be held in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road. The City staff report, including a site plan for Costco’s preferred alternative design (Plan #3), is available online. Revisions to the plans have been made since the original proposal, based on staff and community input. The Draft EIR and other documents are also available at that location.
No decisions will be made at this public hearing ; rather, this is an opportunity for interested community members and members of the Planning Commission to make formal comment on the Draft EIR. These comments will be documented and then specifically addressed in the Final EIR. The community is invited to attend this meeting and offer their comments on the proposal. The Final EIR will come before the Planning Commission early next year.
Redwood City hosted a Community Information Workshop on November 30th, at which approximately 80 community members used the opportunity to learn about and discuss the Costco project. A professional facilitator led the Workshop, and Costco representatives and City staff made presentations and answered questions. A summary of the comments made during that meeting’s small group discussions is part of the staff report.
In 2005, Costco submitted an application to Redwood City to demolish their existing building and replace it with a new, larger Costco retail warehouse building in the back corner of their existing property. Their proposal includes a new Costco gas station with 16 vehicle fueling positions. Since receiving the initial application the City has been preparing studies of the proposed project, and has completed a Draft EIR to assess the potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed project.
Community members are encouraged to comment on the Draft EIR during the public comment period, which ends on December 23 rd, 2006. Written comments or questions should be sent to Jill Ekas at 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063.
