Planning Commission Holding June 19 Public Hearing on Costco Proposal
Redwood City, CA - June 17 , 2007 - On Tuesday, June 19th, 2007, the Redwood City Planning Commission will be conducting a public hearing to consider certification of the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed Costco Warehouse Store and Gas Station project.
The meeting begins at 7 pm and will be held in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road. This is a joint meeting of the Planning Commission and the Redwood City Zoning Administrator.
The City staff report, including a site plan for Costco’s preferred alternative design, and other information on this project is available online. Interested members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend and comment during this public hearing.
A Draft EIR was prepared for this project to assess potential environmental impacts and was made available and circulated for public review and comment between November 8 th and December 23 rd, 2006. That document also examined environmental impacts for alternatives to the project, including the applicant’s preferred alternative. Redwood City hosted a Community Information Workshop on November 30 th, 2006, during which approximately 70 community members used the opportunity to learn about and discuss the Costco project. A professional facilitator led the Workshop, and Costco representatives and City staff made presentations and answered questions. The City also held a public hearing on December 5, 2006 to receive public comment on the Draft EIR, and another community workshop on June 6 th, 2007. The Final EIR responds to the comments received on the Draft EIR and proposes text revisions to the Draft EIR in response to some comments.
The Planning Commission will certify the Final EIR if it finds it acceptable and in conformance with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). EIR certification must occur prior to action on the project. The Zoning Administrator is responsible for reviewing the Use Permit applications.
In 2005, Costco submitted an application to Redwood City to demolish their existing building and replace it with a new, larger Costco retail warehouse building in the back corner of their existing property. Their proposal includes a new Costco gas station with 16 vehicle fueling positions. Throughout the entire period since the proposal was submitted, the City has maintained a commitment to partnering with the community to ensure a purposeful public involvement in this project review, and to engaging and involving the community at every point in the process.
