Redwood City Appoints Interim Fire Chief to Fill Position Upon Departure of Current Chief
Redwood City, CA - November 6th, 2007 - Redwood City announced today that Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Skinner has accepted the assignment of Interim Fire Chief, to fill in at that position upon the upcoming departure of current Fire Chief Gerry Kohlmann. Chief Skinner will assume the post as interim Fire Chief as of Monday, December 24, 2007.
The interim assignment is expected to last eight months while the City conducts a recruitment process for a permanent Chief. Chief Skinner has been with Redwood City Fire Department since June, 1982. He was promoted to Battalion Chief in 1998, and has earned a well-deserved reputation as a credible and admired leader in both the Redwood City Fire Department organization, and the fire industry as a whole. Chief Skinner will continue to provide his unique and respected leadership and oversight of the Fire Department over the next few months during this transitional period.
Chief Kohlmann announced earlier this fall that he would be leaving the post to accept a position in the private sector. He has served as Redwood City’s fire chief since July, 2003, coming here from the San Jose Fire Department where his last position was Acting Deputy Fire Chief. Kohlmann actually launched his career in 1977 as a firefighter with the Redwood City Fire Department. He is leaving Redwood City’s fire department to become vice president of fire services for the firm Lexipol, which develops policy manuals for peace officers, where he will help pioneer a new division developing policies for fire agencies nationwide.
