Summer Brings Reading/Listening Clubs, Fun Programs, and Volunteer Opportunities to Redwood City Public Libraries
Redwood City, CA - June 22, 2009 – There are a multitude of fun summer reading/listening clubs, family programs, and great volunteer opportunities at the Redwood City Public Library, continuing through August 31st. Here’s a brief rundown of these great programs that will promote reading, literacy, fun, and service all summer long!
Reading/Listening Clubs: There are a variety of reading and listening clubs to join! Any reader who reads for 600 minutes (10 hours) before August 31st will receive some wonderful rewards. For those who have not yet learned to read, they can join the Listening Club and listen to 10 hours of stories read to them to get the rewards. Parents have the options of either reading to their children, reading to themselves as their children read their books, or a combination of the two. Sign-ups for these fun clubs will be taken all summer at all four Redwood City libraries at any time during open hours. Rewards include free books, coupons to Malibu Castle mini-golf, discounts for Redwood Roller Rink, pizza coupons, and more.
Programs: The Library’s fabulous and fun weekly summer programs for the whole family are held each Tuesday (4 pm at Schaberg, 7 pm at Downtown) and Wednesday (4 pm at Fair Oaks, 7 pm at Redwood Shores), continuing through July. All programs are FREE and for all ages:
- Jeremy the Juggler – June 23/24
- Musician Andy Z – June 30/July 1
- Singer/guitarist Juan Sanchez – July 7/8
- Puppeteers Swazzle – July 14/15
- Red Panda Acrobats – July 21/22

Free Drawing: Visitors to the library each week through August will receive free tickets (1 per person/per week) for a great drawing! Prizes include an iPod, gift certificates to Toys-R-Us or Kepler's Bookstore, and more. Winners will be announced at the end of August and need not be present to win.
Volunteering: President Obama has announced a summer service initiative called "United We Serve,” encouraging Americans to create meaningful change by volunteering in their communities. The initiative kicks off on Monday, June 22nd, and runs through the new National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who plans to volunteer at a library, joins other members of the Obama administration who will participate in service opportunities nationwide.
