City Invites Parents & Students to Gang Prevention Education Conference

Redwood City, CA – February 17, 2009 - The Sequoia Union High School District and the Redwood City Police Department announce a GANG PREVENTION EDUCATION CONFERENCE for parents and students from all district schools. The conference takes place on Saturday, February 21, 2009, from 9 am – 1 pm at Carrington Hall, Sequoia High School, 1201 Brewster Avenue in Redwood City.

Participants will receive valuable information to help them recognize signs that indicate a youth may be involved in gangs - and what they can do about it. On the program are:

• Manuel Velarde, Redwood City Police Department Juvenile Specialist, who will help participants to understand the diverse nature of gangs, the social, economic, and cultural problems they pose, the community harm they cause, and how families, police, schools, and the community can work together to help students be safe and stay out of gangs.
• Pablo Gonzalez, local motivational speaker with much experience working with youth and families, will address strategies for personal success and creating a positive self-image.
• Students representing the schools in the district will perform a short play conveying powerful messages of hope.
• More than 10 local community agencies will be present to provide information on available resources.
• Free childcare will be available, along with snacks and giveaways.

This special community event is initiated and supported by the District English Learner Advisory Committee, a committee of parents and students representing each of the 5 high schools in the district.

La Ciudad Invita a Padres y Estudiantes a una Conferencia de Educación en Prevención de Pandillas

Redwood City, CA – February 17, 2009 - El distrito escolar “Sequoia Union High School District” y el departamento de Policía de Redwood City, anuncian una CONFERENCIA DE EDUCACION EN PREVENCION DE PANDILLAS para los padres y estudiantes en todos los distritos escolares.  La conferencia ocurre el sábado, 21 de febrero de 2009, comenzando a las 9 AM en el  Auditorio “Carrington Hall” de Sequoia High School, localizado en el 1201 Brewster Avenue, Redwood City.

Los participantes recibirán valiosa información que les ayudará a reconocer las señales que indican cuando un joven pueda estar involucrado en pandillas, y qué hacer al respecto.

• Manuel Velarde, Especialista de Juveniles del Departamento de Policía de Redwood City ayudará a los participantes a comprender la diversa naturaleza de las pandillas, los problemas y consecuencias sociales, económicas y culturales que ocasionan, el daño que éstas causan a la comunidad y cómo las familias, la policía, las escuelas y la comunidad pueden trabajar juntas para ayudar a los estudiantes a estar seguros y mantenerse alejados de las pandillas.
• Pablo González, un orador motivacional con mucha experiencia trabajando con los jóvenes y familias, dirigirá estrategias para el éxito personal y la creación de una imagen positiva de sí mismo.
• Estudiantes representando a las escuelas en el distrito llevarán a cabo una breve obra de teatro para transmitir poderosos mensajes de esperanza.
• Más de 10 agencias comunitarias locales estarán presentes para proporcionar información sobre los recursos disponibles.
• Nuestro evento comunitario proporcionará cuidado de los niños, bocados y rifas.
