The City of Redwood City presents  THE WOW IN DOWNTOWN - A Series of FREE Events on Courthouse Square & Theatre Way in Downtown Redwood City

Redwood City, CA - May 26, 2009 - Downtown Redwood City is going to WOW you again this summer with an enticing variety of FREE events and entertainment, featuring Music, Dance, Movies, Theatre, Art, Culture and more. Four incredible evenings per week throughout the summer will each highlight a free, fun-filled activity, including Jazz Mondays on Main St., Dancing on the Square on Tuesdays, Movies on the Square on Thursdays, and Music on the Square on Fridays. Plus, enjoy six special outdoor exhibits featuring Art on the Square, Monday and Wednesday afternoon musical performances with Lunchtime on the Square, as well as weekend Shakespeare performances, Target Family Days, and Cultural Events.

A wonderful, attractive, enjoyable area to stroll, shop and dine, Theatre Way welcomes you all summer long with its pleasant European atmosphere. Visit www.redwoodcityevents.com for all the details!

The stunning Courthouse Square with its cooling fountains and surrounding exotic eateries, is a great place to enjoy our balmy summer evenings with friends, family, and neighbors. Join the fun the summer and see what this gem on the Peninsula is all about!

Movies on the Square
Thursday nights will give you the big screen, outdoor movie experience, with new and old favorites such as Mamma Mia on June 18th. Other classic films that will delight kids and adults alike through September 10th include Transformers on June 25th, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on July 16th, and Enchanted on August 27th, among others. Bring your friends, family, warm jacket, comfy chair and even blankets or sleeping bags! Shows start at dusk so arrive early to get your choice spot.

Music on the Square
Free live music every week throughout the summer! WOW! Come enjoy 19 wonderful shows not to be missed – every Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm, beginning on May 29thth. With top-quality local and national musical performers — from rock, blues, salsa, and swing, to Latin, Celtic, folk, and country — music fans of all ages will be thrilled to discover and enjoy our free summer concert series, all the way through October 2nd!

Target Family Days
Target Family Days, generously sponsored by Target Stores, will attract kids and adults of all ages one Sunday per month, from 11am until 3pm, beginning Sunday, July 12. Three cultural themes including East Indian-Bollywood, Hawaiian and Latin will round out each enriching event with music, children’s performers, hands-on activities for kids and more. There will be something for everyone, as Courthouse Square becomes the center of a magical assortment of family entertainment. Plus, the street will be closed to through traffic, making a family outing in Downtown a safe and gratifying experience.

Cultural Events
The weekends bring an incredible variety of themed concerts and entertainment to Downtown Redwood City, showcasing musical talent from around the world. Starting on June 27th with the Peninsula Symphony, you can revel in the discovery of a unique culture through its music and movement with four very special events through September 12th, including East Indian, Argentinean and Basque.

Jazz Mondays on Main Street
Jazz Mondays on Main is a new music series this year, building on the success of previous years of Downtown WOW events. In 2009, Main Street will be hosting Jazz concerts every Monday evening from June 22nd  through August 10th featuring the Bay Area's best jazz artists. From 6-8pm, enjoy the music, eat at one of the many great restaurants along Main Street, and if the mood suits you, DANCE! An all-star lineup will be sure to make for many wonderful Monday evenings on Main Street in Downtown Redwood City’s Historic District.

Dancing on the Square
Get ready to kick up you heels on Tuesday evenings with our free dance series, where you’ll see – and learn! - the Tango, Swing, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Waltz, Country Western, Hula, and more. The fun will begin on June 23rd from 6pm-8pm, with a 30-minute demonstration and continues on with public participation. Plus, new this year, Redwoodcityswing.com and Downtown Redwood City are excited to bring to you "Lindy in the Square." On the last Sunday of each month Courthouse Square will host a FREE Outdoor Swing Dance Event from 12:00 - 2:30pm. Featuring free mini-lessons & open social dancing for all ages & all levels, no experience needed and no partner required. Bring your friends, learn to dance, step out in style and have some serious fun Dancing on the Square this summer!

Art on the Square
Redwood City is fast becoming the peninsula’s epicenter for the arts with new galleries and great places to hear live music. Art on the Square fine art and craft shows joins with the Friday night concert series and summer festivals, where artists and artisans exhibiting their inspirational work will transform the streets surrounding Courthouse Square into an outdoor gallery. Presented by Redwood City and its Civic Cultural Commission and Redevelopment Agency, these six, juried art shows from June 19th until September 26th will bring artists exhibiting painting, jewelry, photography, glass, fiber, sculpture, and more.

Lunchtime on the Square
Bring your lunch or just relax with live music each Monday and Wednesday from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Courthouse Square while enjoying wonderful singers, songwriters, and musicians with a wide variety of musical styles. These solo performers will bring that hometown feel to Redwood City's renowned community gathering spot at lunchtime, and make you feel a part of it too!

Shakespeare on the Square
For the Shakespeare lovers in us all, Downtown will also host a series of 4 live theater events during the summer. Featuring Two Gentleman of Verona, this hilarious comedy will be performed in July and August on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 1pm. You won’t want to miss this chance to experience theatre in such an agreeable setting, and to make your summer weekends spectacular, with the dramatic Courthouse Square as backdrop!
