Sponsors and Partners Join with Redwood City to Bring Music on the Square Concert Series to the Community – All Shows to be Announced Soon!

Redwood City, CA - May 8, 2012 - The renowned Friday night concert series “Music on the Square” has been a very popular free feature in Downtown Redwood City since the Square first opened to the community. In the past it’s been largely supported with funds from the City’s redevelopment agency. But this year the State of California took action to dissolve all of the redevelopment agencies in the state, leaving no secure source of funding for the series.

To help offset that loss and keep the music alive, Redwood City partnered with the Redwood City Downtown Business Group (DBG) and the Fox Theatre to put together a plan to secure additional funding and continue the concert series. The plan they came up with has two elements: first, recruit sponsors to contribute funding; second, ask the community to become partners by donating directly at the concerts.

As a result, a number of Downtown businesses and other sponsors have stepped up to join in the effort to save the Friday night concerts, which bring thousands of people downtown week after week to enjoy the wonderful weather, great music, and the many restaurants and shops. And at those concerts, the happy crowds will have opportunities to donate any amount, and contribute to keeping the music in Downtown Redwood City.

Thanks to the hard work of the DBG, City staff, and the Fox Theatre staff, the City is pleased to announce that the Music on the Square series is on starting June 1st. Redwood City is urging the community to join in thanking these sponsors of the Music on the Square series:

  • Shops on Broadway
  • Sakura Teppanyaki and Sushi
  • San Mateo Credit Union
  • Fox Theatre
  • Bud Light
  • Peninsula Infiniti
  • Redwood General Tire
  • Leapset, Inc.
  • La Honda Winery
  • The Franceschini Family

And, in order to extend the series for an additional month, the Shops on Broadway group generously contributed additional funds, recognizing the great community benefit that comes from Music on the Square. With their help, the concert season will now extend for its “traditional” full season, running through September. Sponsors from Shops on Broadway include:

  • The Old Spaghetti Factory
  • Pizza My Heart
  • Yoppi Yogurt
  • Tacone Flavor Grill
  • Chipotle Mexican Grill
  • Portobello Grill
  • Arya Global Cuisine
  • Cost Plus World Market
  • DB Shoes
  • Century Theatres

Thanks to these fine sponsors and partners, the Music on the Square Season is June 1st through September 28th.  The concert series will still need the community’s support, so attendees are asked to take advantage of the opportunities to donate that will be provided at the shows.

The musical lineup this year is shaping up to be remarkable, bringing the wide variety of top quality bands that the community has come to expect from each and every Friday night concert. Facebook followers will get a sneak peak of the lineup on Wednesday May 9th. Follow Redwood City Events on Facebook to find out early! The exact lineup will be posted on the City’s website on Friday, May 11th at www.redwoodcity.org/events. On that site are also schedules for many other spring, summer, and fall events and activities Downtown including Dancing on the Square (Tuesdays), Movies on the Square (Thursdays), and Art on the Square (periodically, Fridays).

Redwood City wishes to offer its gratitude to all the sponsors and partners who have helped to ensure another wonderful season of Music on the Square for the community. Their participation with the City to help fund this concert series is a testament to their commitment and dedication to the people of Redwood City. And, a big thank you in advance to the community members who will become partners by donating to Music on the Square!
