Redwood City Fire Department Participating in “Silver Dragon VII” –
A County-Wide Emergency Preparedness Drill
Local Agencies and Non-Profits from Across County Testing Their Ability to QuicklyDistribute Mass Amounts of Medicine in Emergency Situation

Redwood City, Calif. — The Redwood City Fire Department, with lead agency San Mateo County Public Health, and 17 other local response teams from cities and non-profits from across San Mateo County will join forces today Thursday, April 17, 2014 to participate in the Silver Dragon VII Emergency Drill –a test of the agencies collective ability and readiness to provide timely emergency assistance in the event of a major health emergency such as Pandemic Influenza, a food or water-borne illness, or the intentional release of a bio-agent. This emergency preparedness exercise will take place from 9am to noon.  During this time, for the Redwood City area, teams of Redwood City fire personnel and CERT volunteers will provide participating households in Redwood City and San Carlos with large quantities of education in small reusable bags in place of the medicine and medical supplies that would be needed during a major emergency.

The exercise will test the ability of all agencies – from the County Health System to local fire departments to the American Red Cross – to work together to quickly distribute mass amounts of medicine from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Strategic National Stockpile (SNS).  The SNS would be deployed in the event of a public health emergency severe enough to cause local supplies to run out. Volunteers from Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) will go door-to-door to distribute the simulated medicine bags that could be delivered following a health-related emergency. Last year, partnering agencies delivered “medicine” to more than 15,000 people in three hours. This year, the collaboration looks to beat last year’s record.

Media is welcome to observe the exercise.  The media center location is the Community Activities Building at 1400 Roosevelt in Redwood City. Please note that members of the media are discouraged from interacting with staff and volunteers during the exercise.

Participating Agencies:
San Francisco Bay Area American Red Cross, Belmont, Cal Fire, California Highway Patrol, Coastside CERT, City of Brisbane, East Palo Alto, City of Foster City, Menlo College, Menlo Park Fire Protection District, Millbrae Fire Department, North County Fire Authority, Pacifica Police Department, San Mateo County Health System, San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services, San Mateo Fire Department, San Mateo Medical Center, South San Francisco Fire Department, San Carlos and Redwood City Fire Department.
