Barry Woodruff and thirty of the most talented performers at WHS have been hard at work rehearsing for this year’s spring musical, Once on This Island. This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid” garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run. The show revolves around a group of Caribbean Island peasants who are waiting out a fierce tropical storm by performing a fairy tale of star-crossed lovers; but inherent in this tale are the serious themes of class distinction and racial prejudice which still plague our own society. Through music, song and dance, the musical explores the universal issues which affect us all…love, anger, forgiveness, faith, maturity and death. |
