stafford oak treeNOTICE OF TREE REMOVAL, August 25, 2014

The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and the Public Works Department have come to the unfortunate conclusion that in the interest of public safety, the two large oak trees in the center of Stafford Park must be removed due to significant problems with each tree.

City arborists noticed signs of stress in these trees, conducted a thorough inspection, and then hired two independent consulting arborists to study the trees.  Their comprehensive professional analysis have lead us to the decision that both oaks need to be removed as they are deemed “high” and “extreme” risk of failure.  The trees are infected with Armillaria, also known as oak root fungus.  A root crown excavation inspection determined that the root systems are compromised to a point that in the interest of public safety – especially due to the proximity to the children’s playground, picnic area, and general use of the park - the City will remove the trees on Monday, August 25.

Plans are underway now for planting a number of new trees in the park this Fall.
The independent arborist reports may be found here:

Arborist Report 1 (2.4M, pdf ) | Arborist Report 2 (777K, pdf )

and hard copies of the reports may be viewed at the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, during normal business hours.
