Conceptual rendering of future El Camino Real as a "Grand Boulevard"

Redwood City's Downtown is undergoing a renaissance - and that includes creating a blueprint for the long-term view of what our Downtown will be. Together, the Planning Commission, the community at-large, and the City Council are creating that blueprint - the New Downtown Precise Plan.

Latest Updates:

February, 2010:
After the City Council adopted the Downtown Precise Plan in 2007, a property owner filed a lawsuit claiming that the Plan’s environmental impact report (EIR) did not adequately address certain issues (future taller buildings casting shadows on other properties; the protection of historic structures). The court agreed, finding several aspects of the EIR to be legally inadequate. In the best interest of the community, rather than engage in further lengthy and expensive litigation the City Council decided to set aside the Plan and its EIR. The Council directed staff to prepare a new Downtown Precise Plan and new EIR that address the court's issues.

That Draft Plan is nearly complete, and will be on this website as of March 12 as it proceeds through the environmental documentation process. The CIty has issued a Notice of Preparation (NOP) for the EIR. This describes the proposed project and the environmental review process, and identifies potential environmental effects that will be evaluated in the New Draft EIR. The NOP will be on this web page as of March 1.

Upcoming Meetings:
The community is invited to get an update on the Downtown Precise Plan at the City Council meeting on Monday, March 22, 2010 at 7 pm, and then offer comments on what environmental effects should be addressed in the EIR at the Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, 7 pm
(both meetings to be held at City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road). Written comments may be submitted from March 1st through April 15th.
