Red Light Photo Enforcement

CameraRed light running is a leading cause of automobile accidents, injuries and death at intersections controlled by signal lights. Additionally, enforcement of these types of violations can prove to be particularly dangerous to officers performing traffic enforcement duties. After a period of careful analysis and public education, the City of Redwood City initiated a Red Light Photo Enforcement program in March of 2008. Red Light Photo Enforcement is a safe, cost-effective alternative for enforcing these hazardous violations. Use of this technologically advanced system also serves the dual purpose of increasing both driver awareness and the availability of police officers to respond to the urgent police needs of the community. The legality of Red Light Photo Enforcement systems is recognized by California courts, and operation of the system is governed by provisions of the California Vehicle Code.

What do I do if I receive a violation in the mail?

If you receive a red light violation notice in the mail you can handle the matter in one of three ways: follow the instructions on the violation notice, use the website photonotice.com, or call the Redwood City Police Department Red Light Photo Enforcement office at 650-780-7179.

Photo Enforced SignWhere are the cameras located?

Currently the City of Redwood City operates a Red Light Photo Enforcement system for vehicles travelling eastbound on Whipple Avenue at Veterans Boulevard, and for vehicles travelling southbound on Veterans Boulevard at Whipple Avenue.

Violations Notices and Court:

Initially you will receive a notice from our system vendor (Redflex Traffic Systems) with photos of the driver and the vehicle. An explanation of the violation will be given, as well as directions how to acquire additional information and view a video recording of the violation as it occurred.

You will then receive a notice from the San Mateo County Traffic Court, which explains the fine information and the procedure for contesting the violation should you choose to do so. The notice will also advise you if you are eligible to attend traffic school as a means of keeping the violation off your driving record.

If you have any questions, please call the Redwood City Police Department Red Light Photo Enforcement office at 650-780-7179.
