Safety on the Streets - RCPD Traffic Unit
RCPD Traffic Unit

The Traffic Unit is responsible for the enforcement of traffic laws and the investigation of serious and fatal traffic collisions. The goal is to reduce the occurrences of injury accidents through aggressive, directed enforcement of speed limits and other hazardous violations. Additionally, seat belt and child safety laws are strictly enforced to further reduce the number and severity of injury accidents.

The Unit works with the Traffic and Engineering Departments and with community groups to identify and evaluate unsafe traffic conditions. The Unit actively participates in the City Strike Team and the School Traffic Options Program. The Unit regularly works in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to conduct zero tolerance seat belt enforcement operations. During 2003, the entire department issued 1492 seatbelt / child safety seat citations during the Memorial Day weekend and 1334 seatbelt / child safety seat citations during the Thanksgiving weekend. The traffic unit also regularly participates in several multi-agency enforcement efforts with traffic officers from Belmont, San Carlos, Millbrae, Foster City, and San Mateo.
