Objectives

• Provide safe and efficient thoroughfares for Redwood City’s vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
• Keep right-of-ways and parking facilities free of dirt, refuse and litter, and prevent debris and contaminants from entering the storm drain system.

Overview

Redwood City has about 149 miles of improved streets, six miles of unimproved roadways and 300 miles of sidewalks. In addition, there are 4,400 streetlights, 5,000 traffic control signs, 60 traffic signal intersections and 1,410 parking meters.

Due to the magnitude of street maintenance for Redwood City, not everything can be maintained or repaired simultaneously. PWS has developed a comprehensive strategy of programs and procedures that strive to preserve a clean and safe environment. Included in these programs are:

• A Roadway Management System that helps prioritize maintenance and repair activities on our thoroughfares.
• A Tree Preservation and Sidewalk Repair Program that replaces sidewalks block by block in one section of the city per year.  This program is on a planned rotation that takes 20 years to complete. 
• A Cost Shared Sidewalk Repair Program, which offers more immediate resolution and is available to any property owners that agree to share one half the cost of the repairs to replace damaged concrete.
