Water Service Information

Overview

These pages provide a summary of the City’s water metering practices, its guiding principles regarding the setting of water rates, and links to service related information.  For more detailed information, please see “Metering and Rates Summary” through the link provided above.

Water Metering

The City meters all water customer connections. Single-family and multiple-family customers have their meters read and billed on a bimonthly basis. All other customers have their meters read and billed on a monthly basis. Currently, the City makes about 150,000 meter reads per year.

Historically, the City’s staff walked the 154 different meter routes, accessing each meter – opening the lid and cover – reading and entering the data on a hand-held computer. In September 2002, the City Council approved the purchase of automatic remote meter reading equipment as part of a pilot project. The pilot project targets remote or hillside areas, where meter reading is especially difficult.
