How pressure-assist toilets work
Pressure-assist toilets use compressed air to
create a more forceful flush action. These toilets take advantage of the pressure
of the home's water supply to get the job done, with the help of a pressure tank.
Water from the supply line is forced into the air-filled pressure tank at the
house pressure of 60 psi or so. The air in the tank is compressed and when the
flush lever is pushed, the water rushes into the bowl.
One benefit of a pressure-assist flush is that the water
is contained inside the pressure tank, which is inside the china toilet tank.
That insulation results in little or no tank sweating. Water
rushing from the pressurized tank into the bowl is usually louder than the
typical gravity-fed toilet type. Some people may find it startling at first,
but it only lasts for a second. Another benefit of the pressure-assist flushing
technology is its outstanding waste carrying capacity in the home's drain
line, surpassing that of the average carry distance of typical gravity-fed
type models by about 15 to 30 percent.
