Weaving Community

Join Bay Area fiber artist Rachel Lozada for a hands-on Ilocano weaving workshop (no experience required!).  We will explore themes of community, memory, and social justice while learning about traditional Ilocano weaving.

This workshop is designed to give basic knowledge of Ilocano weaving's socio-cultural and historical significance to the Filipino American community. It relates to this community’s migration to the US beginning in the early 1900s after the US colonized the Philippines at the turn of the century. Ilocanos comprise the second largest Filipino ethnolinguistic group in the US. Participants will get to know some of the most iconic design patterns, symbolisms and relevance, and then try their hands on several types of small looms. The workshop will inspire participants to re-discover and connect to their own family and community history of weaving or artistry.

For all ages. In the Community Room.

Rachel Lozada is a community-based artivist and weaver committed to creating a renaissance of traditional and indigenous Filipino weaving in the Diaspora. Her deep community-engaged model of weaving practice is unearthing the depth of buried histories of weaving traditions within Filipino American immigrant families mirroring the history of female weavers in her own family. She believes weaving is not a spectator art, and by making various looms available for people to try out and experience, she breaks the misconception that weaving is too difficult and challenging to take on.

This workshop is part of a series of events to celebrate Redwood City's Racial Equity Mural "Visions of Equity." From public workshops and hands-on art activities to walking tours and a documentary film screening, the Pathways to Equity series will feature a variety of opportunities to engage with the mural’s artwork, themes, and vision for a more equitable world.

This program series was made possible by a grant from the Redwood City Arts Commission, with additional support from by Friends of the Redwood City Public Library.
