Caring for Our Community: Free Blood Pressure Checks with Cardinal Free Clinics
Stop by the Cardinal Free Clinics table on the Library Plaza (inside the library if it rains) to receive a free blood pressure screening and learn about Cardinal Free Clinics, a transitional clinic that provides free health care to uninsured individuals. They will be sharing information about how to monitor your blood pressure along with available services, community resources, and how to access care!
The American Heart Association estimates that 600 million women worldwide live with high blood pressure. What a better time to get a free blood pressure screening than during Women's History Month.
Fun facts about women pioneers in heart health:
- Harriet Pearson Dustan, M.D. (1920–1999): A leading researcher in Cleveland, Ohio, who pioneeringly investigated nearly all forms of antihypertensive agents. She was the first woman elected to the Board of Governors of the American Board of Internal Medicine and played a critical role in early hypertension treatment studies.
- Suzanne Oparil, M.D.: A clinical cardiologist who made significant contributions to the development of ACE inhibitors and identified endothelin as a major mediator of pulmonary hypertension.
- Marie Maynard Daly, Ph.D.: Conducted foundational research in the 1950s that identified the relationship between high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and damage to blood vessels, helping to understand how diet impacts heart health.
- Nanette Kass Wenger, M.D.: A pioneer in identifying that coronary heart disease risk factors and symptoms differ between men and women, which significantly improved cardiovascular care for women.
- Associate Professor Jun Yang: A modern pioneer whose leadership in identifying primary aldosteronism (PA) led to a fortyfold increase in diagnoses of this curable cause of hypertension.
