One Book, One Coast: Japanese American Local History

A One Book, One Coast Program. In the Community Room

Hear from Kevin W. Kaatz, co-author of Citizen Internees: A Second Look at Race and Citizenship in Japanese American Internment Camps, a powerful exploration of Japanese and Japanese American internees of Redwood City, CA. J.Elmer Morrish, a banker kept their businesses alive, made sure their taxes were paid, and safeguarded their properties until after the end of WWII. Kaatz will share about the discovery of the Morrish Collection and the discoveries held within more than 2,000 pieces of correspondence and other records such as tax bills, government forms, and bank statements.

One Book, One Coast brings together library systems across California, Washington State, and Oregon for a shared community reading program that celebrates literacy, learning, community, and civil discourse. All participating libraries will read and discuss They Called Us Enemy by George Takei
