REDWOOD CITY, CALIF.-The City of Redwood City announced today that the Redwood City Fire Department has achieved a Public Protection Classification rating of Class 1 currently making it the only fire department in San Mateo County to receive such a rating. Nationwide, only 306 fire departments out of 46,000 have received a Class 1 rating, which is less than 1% of all fire departments.
The Redwood City Fire Department protects and serves the communities of Redwood City, San Carlos and some unincorporated areas of the County of San Mateo. The City of San Carlos also receives the Class 1 rating through the Redwood City Fire Department contract for services. Previously Redwood City was rated as a Class 2 fire department and San Carlos a Class 3.
"Achieving this high ranking is a collaboration between the Redwood City Fire Department, San Mateo County Public Safety Communications (dispatch center) and the water departments in both Redwood City and San Carlos. We are proud of this partnership that delivers such a high level of service to the communities we serve," said Stan Maupin, fire chief for the Redwood City Fire Department.
Insurance companies use ISO information combined with other factors to establish local commercial business and residential property insurance rates and generally offer lower premiums in communities with better protection. Property owners are encouraged to check with their insurance companies on potential insurance rate adjustments.
The program provides an objective nationwide standard that helps fire departments evaluate and plan for facilities, equipment and training. ISO collects information on municipal fire-protection efforts in communities throughout the United States, analyzing a community's fire suppression system including emergency communications (dispatch), fire department (including operational and training considerations), and water supply. In addition, the ISO evaluates community efforts to reduce losses through fire prevention, public fire safety education, and fire investigation. ISO assigns a rating from one to 10. Class 1 represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire-suppression program does not meet ISO's minimum criteria.
