Redwood City Receives Prestigious Sustainable San Mateo County Award for its Civic Engagement in Sustainability Activities

Post Date:03/26/2009

Redwood City, CA - March 26, 2009 – Redwood City was selected from among many very qualified nominees as the winner of Sustainable San Mateo County’s Award for Outstanding Civic Engagement. This award honors and recognizes Redwood City’s community building efforts in the area of sustainability, which strive to bring community members into key decision-making processes, and engage them in joining with the City to take responsibility for addressing the many sustainability issues which are faced together, as a community.

The core purpose of Redwood City is to “build a great community together,” and this purpose is interwoven throughout Redwood City’s day-to-day activities related to sustainability. For example, its environmental initiatives (www.redwoodcity.org/coolcity) offer a variety of ongoing public participation opportunities. One pioneering engagement effort was a special World Café discussion on climate change, which drew nearly 100 people to participate in this innovative conversational methodology.

Other examples of Redwood City’s award-winning civic engagement efforts in the area of sustainability include: the “Hoover Area Connection” study sessions, which bring under-served communities into the discussion; the Cool the Earth campaign and “YO!” It’s Youth Outdoors” initiatives; a series of workshops and study sessions that brought together hundreds of interested people to discuss the development of Redwood City’s Downtown Precise Plan; and the unique activities designed to bring community involvement into the City’s New General Plan, including a Saturday morning workshop attended by over 300 people that entertained kids while the adults visited various “stations” to discuss and submit their thoughts on elements of this important long-term planning document (www.redwoodcity.org/generalplan).

Sustainable San Mateo County was established in 1992 by a group of San Mateo County citizens who sought to create a broader awareness of the sustainability concept, with a mission of educating the community about sustainability. Its website is www.sustainablesanmateo.org.

Its core purpose and innovative methods put Redwood at the forefront of civic engagement, not only in the area of sustainability, but in all other areas of the City’s operation. One other key area is its Neighborhood Liaison program, which brings together interested residents who volunteer to help organize their neighbors around any issue that is of importance. With City training, workshops, and resources, the Neighborhood Liaison program has been very popular and effective during its first year (www.redwoodcity.org/nl).
