Redwood City, California — Redwood City, as co-applicants with Caltrans, is proud to announce a significant milestone for the State Route (SR)84-U.S. Highway (US)101 Interchange Reimagined Project (Project) with the award of a $14.2 million grant from the Trade Corridor Enhancement Program (TCEP). Funded by the California Transportation Commission, TCEP supports infrastructure improvements on high-volume freight corridors to increase efficiency and safety. The SR84-US101 Interchange Reimagined Project aligns with these goals by addressing critical freight movement challenges and enhancing multimodal connectivity. With this funding, the Project secures the total estimated cost of $384 million.

Mayor Elmer Martínez Saballos of Redwood City expressed his enthusiasm for the project, remarking: "This is a major milestone for Redwood City and the region. The project improves how people move through our community, whether walking, biking, driving, or transporting goods through the Port of Redwood City. With strong support from federal, state and local partners, we’re delivering infrastructure that improves safety, promotes public health, boosts economic growth, helps residents connect to the Bay and enhances mobility.”

Dina El-Tawansy, Caltrans District 4 Director, emphasized the transformative impact of the project, stating: "Caltrans is pleased to advance the SR84-US101 Interchange Reimagined Project, which brings operational improvements and enhances safety on our state highway system. This project exemplifies our commitment to multi-modality, creating a more connected, efficient and safe transportation network for all users. The impact of this project will be felt across the region for years to come."

San Mateo County Transportation Authority Board Chair, Carlos Romero highlighted the Project's significance in the agency's regional transportation strategy, remarking: "The SR84–US101 Interchange Reimagined Project is a pivotal element in our regional transportation strategy. By connecting the port, Bay Trail and future ferry services, this project underscores its significance not only for the city of Redwood City but for the entire region. The project will also integrate 4.2 miles of new bike and pedestrian facilities, demonstrating our firm commitment to a complete-streets design. Leveraging local sales tax measure funds, the project has successfully attracted a diverse array of additional funding sources, paving the way for a more connected and vibrant community.”

Project Scope and Benefits

The SR84-US101 Interchange Reimagined Project addresses the congestion, multi-modal safety, and operational challenges of the interchange, which has experienced a high number of collisions. Key upgrades include:

Economic Growth and Job Creation

The Project will enhance regional freight movement to the Port of Redwood City and improve access to employment hubs, including Seaport Center, Pacific Shores business parks, Impossible Foods, Meta campuses, and Stanford Medical Center. Reconstruction of the interchange is estimated to result in over 2,500 jobs.

Project Timeline

The Project is currently in the Right of Way acquisition and final design phase, with property owners receiving market-based offers for necessary land acquisitions. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with completion anticipated by 2030.
