Redwood City Announces Downtown Speaker Series and Greater Downtown Planning Effort
Redwood City, California — Redwood City invites residents, workers, and local businesses to a two-part Downtown Speaker Series in support of its effort to refresh the long-term vision for the Greater Downtown Area. The events will engage participants in conversation with local, national, and international planning and design practitioners on topics that will shape the future of Downtown Redwood City—from the design of buildings and streets to the strategies for mitigating the effects of climate change. City staff will share information about the planning process and invite the community to help shape the future of Downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods.
The emerging Greater Downtown Area Plan (GDAP) will guide how Redwood City’s Downtown, Centennial (south of Whipple Avenue), and Stambaugh-Heller neighborhoods grow and invest over the next 20 to 25 years. It will address topics including land use, transportation and connectivity, public spaces, historic and cultural preservation, economic vitality, infrastructure, and climate resilience.
GDAP builds on the success of the 2011 Downtown Precise Plan while responding to new opportunities and challenges. This includes reassessing development caps, preparing for climate risks such as sea level rise and flooding, adapting to post-pandemic economic shifts, and planning for upcoming Caltrain station changes. The GDAP process is expected to conclude in 2027 with final review by the Redwood City Council.
