Redwood City, CA - Today, the City of Redwood City celebrated the ribbon cutting for its new Veterans Memorial Building and Senior Center, a modern, fully ADA-accessible facility designed to support senior services, recreation, wellness programs, lifelong learning, community gatherings, and veteran recognition. The building will open in phases, with the Senior Lunch Program beginning in the new facility on May 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday-Friday. Full programming and access to other amenities throughout the building begins June 8.
The new $56 million facility replaces nearby aging structures with a flexible public building that includes multipurpose rooms, a 279-seat auditorium, wellness and fitness areas, a gymnasium that can support half-court basketball, indoor pickleball and volleyball, and dedicated space for City programs, nonprofit partners, and community use. The building’s state-of-the-art commercial kitchen will also support the City’s popular senior lunch program. Programs currently offered for seniors at free or low cost are expected to continue in the new building.
The facility honors local veterans through integrated, museum-quality multimedia exhibits and commemorative features. Additional exhibits highlight the history of the San Francisco 49ers and the NFL Alumni Association in Redwood City.
“This facility reflects Redwood City’s commitment to building a community for all ages,” said Mayor Elmer Martínez Saballos. “It gives seniors a welcoming place to stay active and connected, honors the service of our veterans, and creates new space for programs, services, and community events that will serve residents for generations.”
The building incorporates high-tech, energy-efficient features for lighting, heating, and cooling, along with sustainable construction materials and water-efficient design. It is expected to receive LEED Platinum designation, the highest level of green building certification.
“This project took years of planning, coordination, and steady work from staff across the organization,” said City Manager Patrick Heisinger. “The result is a practical, accessible, and durable public facility that is ready to support programs, services, and community use every day. We are proud to open it and put it to work for Redwood City.”
The YMCA of Silicon Valley continues to raise funds for a future facility adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Building and Senior Center. That facility is planned to include indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness and wellness center, an early childhood learning center, and additional community amenities.
