Redwood City, CA - Redwood City has launched a new Public Safety Dashboard on its Open Data Portal, giving residents and community members a more accessible way to explore public safety information and better understand emergency response activity across Redwood City and surrounding service areas.
The dashboard brings together information from three main sections: Police Department Activity, Arrests, and Fire Department Activity. Users can view activity over time, explore incidents by neighborhood and service area, apply filters, view maps and infographics, and access definitions and instructions to help navigate the data. The dashboard will be updated on a quarterly basis.
“Transparency and trust are essential to public safety,” said Redwood City Police Chief Kristina Bell. “This dashboard gives our community another way to better understand police activity in Redwood City, including calls for service, arrest trends, and other information that helps tell a fuller story about the work our officers do every day. We want residents to have access to clear, useful information and to feel empowered to engage with us in an informed way.”
The Police Department Activity section provides a broad view of calls for service and other police incidents, including incident source, incident category, neighborhood, and activity over time. The Arrests section offers a more focused look at arrest activity and related trends, including offense type, incident source, action taken, residency, age, sex, and race.
The Fire Department Activity section reflects the full range of Fire Department responses, including medical emergencies, hazardous situations, rescues, public service calls, law enforcement support, and fire-related incidents. The dashboard also includes information by service area, providing insight into the department’s responses in Redwood City, San Carlos, North Fair Oaks and other areas where assistance may be requested.
“Our Fire Department responds to far more than fires,” said Redwood City Fire Chief Baraka Carter. “This dashboard provides greater transparency into the full scope of services we deliver, from emergency medical response and rescues to hazardous conditions, public service calls, and fire incidents. By making this information easily accessible, we can help keep our residents better informed about the hazards and risks within their community, strengthen public awareness, and support a more resilient Redwood City. It also highlights the critical work our fire personnel perform every day to protect the communities we serve.”
The dashboard includes a dedicated How to Use This Dashboard section to help users understand how to navigate between pages, apply filters, interact with charts and maps, and view underlying data in table form.
To complement the Public Safety Dashboard, the City also provides access to CitizenRIMS, an online public information tool for more recent, location-based police activity information. CitizenRIMS includes recent police activity, a 30-day arrest log, stop data, crime statistics, stolen vehicle information, and other public safety resources. CitizenRIMS is designed for more immediate awareness, while the Public Safety Dashboard provides tools for exploring broader patterns and trends over time.
The Public Safety Dashboard is now available on the City’s Open Data Portal. Community members can explore the dashboard and other online tools provided by the City by visiting www.RedwoodCity.org/data.
