Redwood City, CA - Redwood City will begin construction on Monday, July 6, 2026 on for improvements designed to make sections of Broadway safer, calmer and more accessible for people walking, biking, driving and visiting nearby businesses.
The Broadway Pavement Overlay and Curb Ramp Project will repave sections of Broadway, add new and refreshed bike lanes, upgrade curb ramps and portions of sidewalks, and improve pedestrian crossings. Construction is expected to take up to three months, with work generally scheduled between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, outside of peak commute hours. The work will be staggered to minimize impact on people moving through the corridor.
The work supports the city’s efforts to improve its Pavement Condition Index score and complete recommended projects in its Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan. The City Council awarded the $2.8 million construction contract to Interstate Grading & Paving on April 27.
“Broadway is an important main corridor for residents, businesses, students, pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers,” said City Manager Patrick Heisinger. “These improvements will help calm traffic , make crossings more visible and accessible, and improve safety for everyone traveling through the area.”
The project includes work along the following sections of Broadway:
Chestnut Street to Maple Street: This section includes grinding and overlaying the roadway, removing one travel lane in each direction, adding a center turn lane and bike lanes, improving curb ramps at Maple, Cassia and Beech streets, and installing pedestrian-activated flashing beacons with high-visibility crosswalks at Beech Street. The lane reconfiguration is intended to help calm traffic and improve visibility for people walking, biking and driving.
Winslow Street to Marshall Street/Arguello Street: This section includes grinding and overlaying the roadway, improving curb ramps and installing pedestrian-activated flashing beacons at the midblock crossing near Fireside Bookstore. The improvements will make the crossing more visible and easier to navigate.
Birch Street to Hopkins Avenue: This section includes grinding and overlaying the roadway, removing and replacing the sidewalk on the north side of Broadway from Birch Street to Duane Street, installing bulb-outs with pedestrian-activated flashing beacons at Clinton Street, upgrading streetlights and refreshing bike lanes. The bulb-outs will shorten crossing distances and improve pedestrian visibility.
The City is working with the contractor to prioritize the Broadway 3 segment, from Birch Street to Hopkins Avenue, so sidewalk work can be completed before the start of the next school year in mid-August.
During construction, the public may experience temporary traffic delays, lane closures, parking restrictions, construction noise and pedestrian detours. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained, although temporary access changes may be needed during certain phases of work.
Nearby residents and businesses are in the process of receiving project mailers now through June 30. The City will also share updates through Redwood City eNews, the city website, social media, construction signage and direct outreach to nearby businesses and residents.
