Economic Development & Business Resources

Redwood City’s Economic Development Division is part of the City Manager’s Office. Services include business attraction and site selection assistance, business retention and expansion, access to labor force data and demographics, small business support and community building, as well as collaborating on workforce development projects. The goal of these efforts is to market the City’s many economic advantages in order to enhance the competitiveness of our local economy and to maintain a strong and diverse revenue and job base on the Peninsula.

Economic Development Work Plan  

Redwood City has changed dramatically in the last 10 years, building on years of success. New residential and commercial development downtown, along with the events and evolution at Courthouse Square, has positioned Redwood City as “The Peninsula’s Downtown” -- a day-to-night hub for workers, residents and visitors.

The City’s Planning division is currently drafting a new plan for the future of downtown, working on connectivity and expansion of what makes Redwood City great. More information is available at the Greater Downtown Area Plan website.

Outside of downtown, the pace of change is just as swift. Redwood Shores remains a popular destination for life sciences, biotechnology and traditional IT firms, and commercial corridors throughout the city are growing and changing.  The Economic Development Division is currently undertaking a strategic planning process to map out a vision and roadmap for supporting Redwood City’s economic prosperity by attracting, retaining, and expanding a diverse mix of businesses that meet community needs.

Additional information and community engagement opportunities will be posted as they become available. Staff aim to bring a plan to City Council in early 2027.

While the new 5-year strategic plan is being developed, Economic Development staff will continue to implement goals from the last two-year Economic Development Work Plan (staff report) and various special projects that are focused on creating a community where people of all backgrounds and income levels can thrive.
