A person must be a resident and elector of the Redwood City City Council district in which they seek nomination for at least 30 days immediately preceding the appointment or final filing day for nomination in order to become a candidate for the office of City Council Member.

A: Voters in City Council districts 1, 3, 4, and 7 will vote to elect a City Councilmember from each respective district during the November 5, 2024 election. View the City Council Election District map to search your residential address and confirm the district you live in.

Q: How can I run for office during the November 5, 2024 election?

A: Becoming a candidate for local office requires many steps, which are prescribed by local and state law and follow a specified timeline and sequence. Individuals who are interested in learning more about running for local office are encouraged to review the Candidate Toolkit provided by the Fair Political Practices Commission and should also review information on the San Mateo County Elections Office website. More information about the administration of local elections can also be found in the City Charter.

Individuals who are interested in running for City Council must be residents and electors of the district in which they seek nomination for at least 30 days immediately preceding the date upon which they file a declaration of candidate for the office of City Councilmember. The nomination period to run for City Council for the November 5, 2024 election will be July 15, 2024 – August 9, 2024. Nomination papers will be issued by the City Clerk and must be completed and returned to the City Clerk within the nomination period.

Q: Will the positions of Mayor and Vice Mayor also be up for election in 2024?

A: No, City Council candidates who run for election in November 2024 will not be running for Mayor or Vice Mayor, as those are not elected positions. Per Section 14 of the City Charter, the Mayor and Vice Mayor are each selected by the City Council for 2-year terms.  The current Mayor and Vice Mayor’s terms will expire in December 2024, and at that time, the next Mayor and Vice Mayor will be selected by the City Council.

Q: Does the City of Redwood City have local campaign finance limits?

A: In February 2020, the City Council adopted an ordinance placing mandatory limits on campaign contributions to City Council candidates and set voluntary overall expenditure limits on campaigns. The ordinance is designed to allow City Council candidates and incumbent City Councilmembers to spend less of their time on fundraising, and more of their time communicating on issues of importance to voters and constituents. The City Council adopted a revised ordinance in February 2022 to further reduce barriers to running for office and to increase the Voluntary Expenditure Limit based on the Consumer Price Index.  View the revised ordinance here.

The ordinance requires the City Clerk to publish notice of an increase in the expenditure ceiling amount for candidates who voluntarily agree to expenditure limits. Notice of an increase in the expenditure limits is published by February 1 in even-numbered years and may vary across City Council districts.
