Know Your Rights

As an employee, the City’s ordinance outlines your rights, including, but not limited to:

  • The right to file a complaint and inform the City about any business not complying with the City’s local minimum wage regulations
  • The right to inform any other employee of their potential rights and assist them in reporting a business not complying with the City’s local minimum wage regulations

Guidance from the San Mateo County Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement

Employees should regularly review their paycheck and look out for:

  • Being paid less than the local minimum wage
  • Missing pay for all hours worked
  • Not receiving overtime – or being told you don’t qualify for overtime pay
  • Bounced checks or unfair deductions

Most workers in San Mateo County are also protected by a few other important workplace rights, including:

  • An unpaid 30-minute meal break during each shift of five hours or longer, and a paid 10-minute rest break for every four hours of work.
  • Accruing and using up to 40 hours, or five days, of paid sick leave per year.
  • A workplace free of recognized hazards to worker health and safety.
  • Not being treated differently based on your race, sex, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy or age.

Report a Violation

To report a suspected violation, you must submit a complaint. Employees are protected from retaliation even if the complaint turns out to be unfounded. Any complaints received are considered confidential to the maximum extent permitted by law; this includes the name or any other identifying information of the employee or person reporting the violation.

The City of Redwood City contracts with the County of San Mateo to provide enforcement for the Minimum Wage Ordinance through the Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement (OLSE).
