The Redwood City Improvement Association, a non-profit community benefit district that works to enhance Downtown Redwood City, in partnership with Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department installed 20 eclectic sidewalk shadow art stencils- a flat shadow dimensional art effect using stencils- completed by local artist Damon Belanger. At the end of 2015, the Redwood City Improvement Association donated $30,000 for public art installations in the Downtown area to make the downtown district even more vibrant. The shadow art is the first part of the public art installation. The second public art installation, set to be an interactive wall mural, will be completed at a later time this year.
Damon Belanger was hand-selected by a committee after reviewing multiple entries, renderings and hosting several interviews. A few of the 20 different locations in the downtown area include one-of-a-kind shadow art stencils on the bike racks on Middlefield near the Courthouse Square, light posts on Broadway in front of Dragon Theater, benches by the post office off Jefferson and more. He has uniquely transformed sidewalks and community spaces into memorable works of public art and a full map of his work can be found here.
