Adaptive Physical Education
Adaptive Physical Education (PE)
Adaptive Physical Education (PE) offers a fitness program designed for individuals of all abilities, including those with physical or health limitations. The goal of the program is to increase the level of function and wellness for all participants. Program benefits include cardiovascular fitness, strength training, flexibility, balance and coordination with an emphasis on improving mobility, independence, fall prevention and quality of life. Instructors will design and implement individualized exercise programs for all students. Personal fitness goals will be evaluated periodically. The students give one another support, encouragement and friendship.

Generous Grants and Partnerships
The program began in 1989, and was originally sponsored through Cañada College. In 2010, with the generous support from Sequoia Health Care District, Kaiser Permanente, Palo Alto Medical Foundation and the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, the program expanded its services into the community. It is our mission, as
well as that of our grant partners, to continue to provide health and fitness services at a reasonable cost.
Description of Classes
All exercise classes are structured in a way that offers a personalized exercise program carried out in a group setting. Each individual is allowed to progress at his or her own pace and to feel safe in an environment where they will not be intimidated or judged for their own particular level of ability. Each class is 90 minutes long and encompasses the following components:
Group Exercise
This segment is 45 minutes long and includes a warm-up, strength-training exercises, cardiovascular conditioning, balance and a cool down.
Independent Workout
Depending upon the individual, only a small amount of instruction may be necessary prior to exercising independently. Cardiovascular and strength training equipment such as: NuSteps, treadmills, arm
cycles, wall pulleys, balance and stability balls, parallel bars, etc. are all available for use.
Personalized Training
Before and/or after the group exercise, students can work with a personal fitness trainer to tailor a specific exercise program to meet their individual fitness and wellness goals. Great care will be taken to choose appropriate exercises with an emphasis on safety and adaptations for each individual.
