What is Esports?
Esports (also known as electronic sports, e-sports, or eSports) is a form of sport competition using video games. Esports often takes the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions. Generally, Esports can be applied to any type of digital game that is competitive, regardless of specific format and theme.
Redwood City PRCS has partnered with Mission Control (host platform) to bring Esports opportunities to our community.
Mission Control is a platform for rec league Esports, similar to a local adult softball league or college intramurals — but for video games. Mission Control manages the league schedule, validates scores, and determines the champion while also serving as a community forum for league members and friends.
Gamers join Mission Control leagues (hosted by local and national organizations) for a casual, social experience doing something they love with their community.
What is the cost of participating? Our Summer leagues will be free. Future leagues will range from $10-$20 per season.
What equipment do I need to participate?
Participants must have access to their own console and game. Access to the consoles online network (Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Nintendo Switch Online) is required.
Participants will also need to download the Mission Control (host platform) app.
Is gaming equipment provided?Equipment is currently not provided. We plan to host “in person” options for future leagues where participants would have access to all necessary equipment.
When do the Leagues start?
Registration for summer leagues will close on Thursday, June 4th. Games start on Monday, June 8th and will end the week of July 20th.
Fall, Winter, and Spring leagues TBD (all leagues will be 7-8 weeks long).
What are the benefits of Esports?
Esports benefit competitors’ personal development in many ways.
Social engagement - Learn the importance of sportsmanship and communication through gameplay.
Cognitive improvements - Improve memory, focus, and attention while enhancing creativity
Develop motor skills - Exercise fine motor skills and develop better hand-eye coordination and gaming performance
Are there prizes available?
Summer league champions will be awarded and entry certificate for future leagues. In future leagues, we will offer prizes for playoff qualifiers and champions.
Prizes will include entry certificates (playoffs) and market place gift cards (champions).
